Information Systems and Power in the Organizational Context
  Abstract:

It is widely known that information systems are social systems. Social systems are constructed mainly through negotiations and bargaining amongst their members. These negotiations and interactions will depend greatly on how powerful agents are and the power structure that sustains the social system. Therefore, research in information systems, because of its social nature, should be based in a clear understanding of the power phenomenon.
This research is focused on the relationship between information systems and power in the context of organizations. It aims to develop a comprehensive theoretical framework on which to base understanding about the relationship between power and information systems. This research will also contribute in developing a tool that will help protagonists to identify and interpret such power issues. An ultimate goal for this work is to support the task of minimising conflict endemic in organisational change and information systems development.
